The coastal region of Kenya is an important area in terms of its ecological and economic significance. The region is the country’s leading tourist destination. The sunny and sandy beaches have since independence attracted thousands of tourists resulting in mushrooming of hotels/resorts along the coastline. This has had tremendous impact on the rate of growth of towns and urban centres in the region. This increasing urbanisation of hitherto rural areas has also attracted the rural populations to the area along the coastline. The coral reefs, mangroves and other delicate marine ecosystems are now threatened by these developments. |
| The
Kenyan Government continues to lobby for increased visitor numbers to Kenya
who most likely would spend over 60% of their time at the coast in a bid
to attract significant funds to boost the nation’s foreign exchange
reserves. Majority of the population in the region depend on subsistence farming, fishing and tourist industry. Lack of awareness on the importance of the sea and the marine ecosystem has meant that the region’s ecology is getting destroyed and fastly polluted thereby jeopardising everybody’s livelihoods. Our target to educate the youth of these delicate ecosystems hopes to bring up a youth population well equipped with knowledge and skills essential as marine conservation custodians. The Coast Regional office now has camping facilities always at the disposal o any group visiting the region and wishes to use these facilities. The camping gears can accommodate at least 40 students and 10 teachers. The staff will organize for camping grounds for the groups. Get accommodated at the coast and enjoy the white beaches along the coast. This is an experience you would never wish to miss. You will be offered with cooking facilities, please book early to avoid inconveniences. The cost per person,
