Eastern Regional Office

The Wildlife Clubs of Kenya six years ago opened the Eastern Regional Office in Kitui to specifically focus on Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) Biodiversity. The office co-ordinates various Environmental Education activities for the Eastern region which covers Kitui, Machakos, Makueni and Mwingi districts. The eastern regional office aims to increase public awareness on the conservation and importance of ASAL biodiversity of the region and to disseminate information, knowledge and skills on activities which people would undertake at the local level to alleviate pressure on available resources. WCK eventually hope to strengthen the operations and activities of the Kitui office through the establishment of a fully fledged ASAL Environmental Education Centre.

Currently the following are some of the activities the office carries out.

The Eastern Region of Kenya is an important area in term of its dry land ecosystems and ecology. Arid as it is, it contains some of the most important rivers in the country. The Tiva River which passes through the Tsavo national Park, Tana River passing through the Northern part are some of the major rivers. The riverine ecosystems normally covered with lush vegetation green bushes and high grass is known to be home to rare plants and species of mammals and birds.

The riverine vegetation is now being cleared to give way to settlement and agriculture. Wanton sand harvesting from the riverbeds is gradually reducing the water capacity in the rivers and destroying the riverine vegetation. The natural forests on the numerous hills are faced with similar destructions. These used to be sacred sites and cultural shrines. It is also known that the region contains valuable diverse indigenous plant species which are very rare, useful and tremendously boost the economy not ony of the region but also of the entire country and provide employement for our people. Some of the plant species are Ebony (Mpingo), Aermilia brownii (Mahogany) and Balanites aegytica used for wood carving. Over exploitation of these indigenous trees is causing concern for their future survival.

Other areas of great importance are Tsavo National Park which attracts thousands of tourists; the South and North Kitui National reseves whicj remain unutilized partly due to lack of awareness. The Yatta Plateau which covers a wide range of Machakos and Kitui districts, the gap-tooth Kimathenya mountain, Nzambani rock and many others. Majority of the population depend on these ASAL resources in one way or the other and therefore, there is need to educate them on sustainable management of the natural resources.

The ASAL regional office and consequently he Education Centre was established with the following objectives:
-To increase public awareness on the conservation and importance of ASAL biodiversity.
-Educate school groups on local ecology and prevailing environmental issues
-To act as a resource centre and offer support to school clubs regional wildlife clubs action groups and their activities locally. This will encourage them to initiate their own environmental activities
-To network with local NGO’s and conservation groups.
-To liaise with WCK National headquarters and line ministries for education Tourism Wildlife and Environment on the development of a National Environmental education strategy.

WCK is soliciting for a piece of land through the government so as to establish an Education centre which will be able to offer the following facilities:
