Whether you are a prospective student, a parent or an interested stakeholder in the tourism industry, the Centre for Tourism Training & Research (CTTR) can benefit from your involvement in our activities. Each and everyone one of you shapes the tourism industry in different ways and this impacts on our training. Welcome and train with us or help us to train better.

CTTR is a training and research programme of the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK). The centre was launched in response to the challenges posed by the increasing demands of sustainable tourism development in the country as well as contributing to the career development needs of WCK student members. The diversification of tourist products and tourist circuits in Kenya will not only require appropriate and relevant marketing strategies but also competent personnel in terms of knowledge, skills and adaptability to changes.

Our training focus at CTTR is to aim at producing such personnel with the research component constantly enriching the courses and informing our overall training policy and direction. Thus, work at CTTR involves training action and reflection on that action as a continuous process for us to remain a credible actor in the tourist industry.

CTTR is also linked to Moi University, Faculty of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management and the Department of Tourism. Training at CTTR therefore brings the best of WCK and Moi University together. WCK’s 30 years of conservation education experience and Moi university’s scholarly expertise join at CTTR to produce middle cadre professionals in the tourist and wildlife sector. The training has therefore a good blend of both theory and practice reflecting the backgrounds of the collaborating institutions.

I am proud of both the students and staff at CTTR for the cordial and friendly teaching and learning atmosphere at the centre. Our staff encourage the students to be involved in the teaching and learning process in order to help them develop their critical and analytical skills. Joining CTTR is therefore a serious personal pursuit of both intellectual and professional development. CTTR’s resources at WCK and Moi University will facilitate this.

BACKGROUND
• Many WCK members after completing school expressed the interest to continue with conservation related activities. WCK responded to the members’ needs by establishing the WCK Centre for Tourism Training & Research .

DIPLOMA IN TOURISM AND WILDLIFE STUDIES • The diploma in Tourism and Wildlife studies course is a joint programme between Moi University (Faculty of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management and Tourism Department) and the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK). • The course aims at meeting the needs of the middle cadre professionals in the tourism and wildlife sector that is currently no longer offered in Kenya. The tourist sector is one of the most important industries in our country and this is to a large degree driven by our wildlife and other natural resources.

• The special feature and focus of the course is its emphasis on community oriented programmes and initiatives in Wildlife Management and tourism.
• The production of middle cadre personnel trained and skilled in both tourism and wildlife management has not been addressed in this country.
• The Wildlife Clubs of Kenya is Africa’s leading and founder youth conservation organisation. The scholarly expertise of Moi University and the practical experiences of Wildlife Clubs of Kenya have joined in the development of this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

• To provide students with appropriate knowledge and skills in both Tourism and Wildlife Management for participating and advising in all matters of wildlife and tourism conservation and management.
• To equip students with knowledge and skills in bushcraft and survival techniques.
• To provide knowledge and skills in the management of tourism and wildlife enterprises in order to promote entrepreneurship.

• To develop theoretical and practical skills necessary to conduct tourism and wildlife research, extension and to develop their careers
• To acquire, interpret and apply policies and law for the for the wildlife and tourism management, conservation and utilisation of wildlife enterprises and other related natural resources for community development.
• To qualify and prepare the students for entry into a range of wildlife and tourism careers where their diverse knowledge is applicable.
• To provide students with skills in managing human, financial, and capital resources in conservation and tourism areas.
• To provide opportunities for career development in the wildlife and tourism sector.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

• For admission to the Diploma course the student should have completed the one year Certificate Course in Tour Guiding at Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Centre for Tourism Training & Research.
• To pursue a certificate course the student must have obtained a principal pass in either History or Geography and/or with a minimum of ` O ‘level pass with a C plain, good passes in English, Swahili, Geography, History, Mathematics and Biology and have an interest in conservation.

COURSE DURATION

• The course will take two years.
• Successful completion of the first year will result in the award of a certificate in tour guiding. Students proceed on attachment during the last three months. Students whose results have been graded `good’ may proceed for the second year to complete the diploma.
• During the second year, the course gradually builds both on theoretical knowledge and practical skills in tourism and wildlife management. This now prepares our students to join Moi University for further training

COURSE DESCRIPTION

• Students must take Fourteen courses in the first year namely, Professional Techniques in Tour Guiding and Administration, Touristic Geography of East Africa, French/German, Tourism Theory, Social Studies, Law, Radio Theory and communication practice, History of E.A, Social Anthropology, Community Based Conservation, Intro. to Computing, First Aid, Driving, Field attachment.

In the second year students will take twelve courses:Mammology, Ornithology, Outward Bound Training, Introduction to Tourism management, Basic Statistics & Research Methods, Principles of Marketing , Animal Diseases, Wetland Conservation , Research Project, Park management, Policy and law in Tourism & Wildlife Management, Introduction to Hospitality Management, Human Dimensions in Wildlife Management, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Principles of Accounting, Principles of Management, Travel and Tour Management, World Tourism, Health and Environment, Range Ecology and Management, Introduction to Wildlife Utilisation and Economics, Ecotourism and Entrepreneurship.
